BLUE Institute is dedicated to education and research for resilient oceans & water
Judith Underwood is a social entrepreneur, environmentalist, and an educator who is dedicated to supporting sustainable practices for equitable and accessible economic development. She is the CEO and Co-Founder of BLUE Institute Labs, PBC the home of the BLUE Excelerator, the BLUE Incubator, and the future home of the oceanfront BLUE Innovation Center. Judith is an ecosystem builder and is passionate about growing BlueTech and the wider Blue Economy through the Northeast or “Blue England.” She believes strongly in bringing startups together with academia, industry, and government agencies to create “innovation through collaboration.” Judith also founded the Blue Institute, Inc., a non-profit global hub for education, research, community engagement and is home to the BLUE Semester. Both the BLUE Institute and the BLUE Institute Labs are mission driven to support clean water, climate resiliency, and healthy & secure oceans.
Judith has 15+ years of scientific development, and technology transfer work at research and educational institutions including MIT, the United Nations, and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy. She has taught at all levels and to all ages and was the first woman in Massachusetts to start a solar company. She was a long-time board member of the Pleasant Bay Community Boating playing a key role in that organization's success in establishing a permanent waterfront campus. Judith has a B.A. from the University of Massachusetts Boston, a master’s from New York University, and has additional environmental graduate studies from Antioch University New England. Judith is from Cape Cod where she is raising her two children, writes poetry & short plays, and serves her community as a Trustee on the Affordable Housing Trust and as a Water & Wastewater Commissioner overseeing the award-winning Harwich Water Department.
